Lifeguard Training
The Boonslick Heartland YMCA periodically holds Lifeguard and CPR/First Aid certification courses that are open and available to the community. These certification courses are offered on varying weekends every year in the Spring.
A valid e-mail must be provided at the time of registration, as both certifications have prerequisite e-learning courses that must be completed prior to the date of class.

Jr. Guard Certification Requirements
Lifeguard Certification consists of a 2 day course held: Prerequisite swim test: Friday at 4:30 PM Friday evening: 5:30 - 8:00 PM Saturday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM The eligibility swim test required for junior guards are held the Friday of the session at 4:30. Youth Aquatic Safety Assistant (YASA or Jr. Guard) registrants must be 14 by the last day of class. Lifeguard Certification Requirements
Lifeguard Certification is a multi-day course held: Prerequisite swim test: Friday at 4:30 PM Friday evening: 5:30 - 8:00 PM Saturday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Sunday: 1:00 - 5:00 PM Each participant must attend all sessions, no exceptions. PHYSICAL COMPENTENCIES NECESSARY TO PASS THE LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION CLASS:
Phase 1: Tread water for 2 minutes - swim 100 yards of front crawl
Phase 2: Swim 50 yards of each-
Phase 3: Participants start in the water at the shallow end. They must then sprint for a distance of approximately 60ft, and then perform an arm-over-arm surface dive in 8-10ft of water (or maximum depth of training facility)

- Front Crawl with the head up
- Sidestroke
- Breaststroke
- Breaststroke with the head up
- Elementary backstroke kick with hands on the chest
Phase 3: Participants start in the water at the shallow end. They must then sprint for a distance of approximately 60ft, and then perform an arm-over-arm surface dive in 8-10ft of water (or maximum depth of training facility)
- Pick up an object (diving ring) from the bottom of the pool, surface, tread water for at least 1 minute with legs only, and replace the object back to the bottom of the pool where it was found.
- Swim the remaining length to end of the pool, and hoist yourself out of the water. Immediately begin compression on an adult manikin for 1 minute or 100 compressions, and stand and listen to directions from instructor.
